COVID-19 Latest: 'We Are Really Struggling'Pandemic Expert Regina Phelps on Infection Trends, Vaccine Production
It took 100 days for the world to record its first 1 million COVID-19 infections. A week ago, 1 million cases were added in just over one day. In advance of the Thanksgiving break, pandemic expert Regina Phelps shares insights on the virus, testing and how soon we might see vaccines.
As states impose new restrictions and as businesses push back their dates for reopening offices, Phelps addresses everyone's top question: When can we expect the pandemic to end?
"The pandemic is over only when herd immunity has been reached," says Phelps, founder of Emergency Management & Safety Solutions. "Regardless of some of the squirrelly ideas you've heard ... herd immunity has only been reached anywhere in the world, with any disease, by vaccination - not by disease.
"Even if you look at [eradicating] things such as small pox or polio, it wasn't because everybody got sick. It's because everybody got vaccinated. That's the really key issue here that we have to stop and think about. We have to have widespread vaccination."
In a video interview with Information Security Media Group, Phelps discusses:
- Where we are with the virus, testing and vaccines;
- The pandemic'd impact on people;
- How businesses and governments should approach these critical coming months.
