The acquisition reflects a broader understanding of the distinct requirements in OT cybersecurity compared to traditional IT security approaches. "The acquisition is because of the capability that they have. They are very strong in engineering and innovation of very high-security components and capability," said Goh Eng Choon, president of cyber at ST Engineering. "So our acquisition is, instead of just augmenting on the encryption side, it's also looking at their capability to build on additional capability along the way."

Choon described the fundamental differences between IT and OT systems. In IT, you always talk about confidentiality, integrity of the information and availability of the system. But OT is slightly different, because we are focusing on safety, and we want to make sure that the operations continue, he said.

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at the GovWare Conference and Exhibition 2024, Choon also discussed:

  • How ST Engineering addresses OT cybersecurity challenges while maintaining operational continuity;
  • Solutions for SMEs that provide security without burdening their resources;
  • The role of academia-industry partnerships in advancing cyber resilience.

Choon leads ST Engineering's cybersecurity business, overseeing security operations centers, managed services and professional training. He has built over 20 SOCs globally and is a part of Singapore's Cybersecurity Advisory Group.
