The Changing Role of DPOs

Data Protection Officers Do More Than Ensure Compliance
The Changing Role of DPOs

Data protection officers are assuming a more strategic role that goes beyond ensuring compliance with laws and regulations, says Rob Masson, CEO of the DPO Center, a London-based organization that provides outsourced DPOs.

The European Union's General Data Protection Regulation requires many organizations to appoint a DPO. "Very early on it was all about understanding data [protection laws]. Now the focus is very much on how we can adapt the organization going forward," Masson says in an interview with Information Security Media Group.

A DPO must put in place mechanisms and processes to continually ensure maintenance and monitoring of compliance with a variety of global regulations and make sure privacy protection efforts are robust, he says.

In this interview (see audio link below image), Masson also discusses:

  • The challenges of compliance with GDPR;
  • How privacy rules are getting more complex;
  • How the role of the DPO has evolved.

Masson is CEO and data protection specialist at The DPO Center, a London-based organization that provides outsourced DPOs. He has founded four technology organizations over the last 30 years.
